CyberPurify Safeguarding Children in the Digital Age

CyberPurify is a technology startup founded in 2020 in California, USA, by two co-founders: tech expert Nguyễn Hữu Bình and child rights advocate Nguyễn Như Quỳnh. From its inception, CyberPurify chose a challenging but meaningful path—developing artificial intelligence solutions to filter harmful content on the Internet in order to build a healthier and safer digital environment for children and families. The idea behind the technology stemmed from a concerning reality: children are gaining access to the Internet at increasingly younger ages, yet protective tools have not kept pace with the explosive growth of online content, especially the spread of pornographic, violent, and toxic materials.

During the product development phase, the founding team focused on building an AI-powered content filtering system capable of analyzing images in real time. Their first minimum viable product (MVP) was CyberPurify Kids, a browser extension that immediately detects and blurs harmful images or videos across major browsers such as Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. The harmful content detection technology is powered by deep-learning AI trained on millions of images, enabling it to process even untagged or unflagged content that traditional warning systems might miss.

Building on this initial success, they developed CyberPurify Egg, an advanced version that operates as a standalone content-filtering device. It works seamlessly across a wide range of devices including smartphones, tablets, laptops, smart TVs, and gaming consoles. The Egg also integrates features like time limits for social media and online gaming, helping to prevent Internet addiction among children. This marked a major step forward in both technological capability and product deployment strategy—moving beyond browser-based solutions to cover the entire digital ecosystem that children interact with.

Globally, many content control tools for children have been developed, such as Google Family Link, Apple Screen Time, and content filtering software like Qustodio. However, CyberPurify stands out with its ability to detect harmful imagery in real time, even before adults are aware of it. Rather than relying solely on whitelists or blacklists or controlling access by domain name, CyberPurify’s solution dives deeper into the actual content displayed, increasing accuracy and significantly reducing the risk of harmful content slipping through the cracks.

Praised for both its practical application and human-centered mission, CyberPurify was named among the top five winners of the AI Accelerator Challenge 2021, organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam in collaboration with the Australian Government. It then went on to reach the finals of VietChallenge 2022 in New York, a global startup competition that highlights the most promising Vietnamese-founded ventures. These achievements not only helped CyberPurify expand its market reach but also reinforced the belief that artificial intelligence can be developed to serve social good, not just commercial profit.

Developing content filtering technology requires significant resources in terms of data, computation, and rigorous testing, yet it does not yield immediate high profits like traditional commercial models. Nevertheless, by focusing on a truly urgent societal issue and committing to user-centered innovation—with children and parents at the heart of its efforts—CyberPurify has gradually built a strong support community and expanded its global presence.

With a steadfast commitment to protecting children from harmful online content, CyberPurify continues to advance cutting-edge technological solutions, contributing to the creation of a safer and healthier online environment for children worldwide.
