VinaStraws Offers Green Straw Solutions to Reduce Plastic Waste

VinaStraws is one of the pioneering startups in Vietnam specializing in the production of drinking straws made from natural materials such as rice flour and cassava flour. Motivated by concerns over plastic pollution and a desire to promote green consumption trends, the founding team sought to develop a product that is not only environmentally friendly but also safe for consumers’ health.

The technological concept originated from observing the global market for biodegradable straws, which often face limitations such as low water resistance, high costs, or difficulties in mass production. VinaStraws produces straws made from 100% rice flour, cassava flour, and natural coloring, with no additives. The straws can be stored under natural conditions for around 18 months and used in cold drinks for approximately 2 hours, after which they soften but do not alter the taste of the beverage.

Beyond the technical aspects, VinaStraws‘ strength lies in its deep understanding of consumer preferences. The current product line includes naturally colored straws in shades such as green, indigo purple, and terracotta orange. These colors are derived from Vietnamese vegetables, ensuring both visual appeal and food safety. This advantage makes the products more attractive to both domestic and international customers, particularly in restaurants, hotels, and events that aim to elevate sustainable consumer experiences.

VinaStraws‘ products have garnered attention from markets such as Europe, the United States, and Southeast Asia, where consumers are increasingly seeking biodegradable and health-safe alternatives. Participating in the 2025 P4G Summit in Vietnam presents a valuable opportunity for VinaStraws to connect with international partners, investors, and development organizations that are interested in green startup models. It also serves as a springboard for the startup to scale its exports and enhance its production capacity to meet growing demand.

VinaStraws transforms environmental challenges into market opportunities, leveraging technology alongside Vietnam’s agricultural strengths. By selecting rice flour and cassava flour—two abundant local crops—as raw materials, the company not only reduces production costs but also creates sustainable value for the domestic supply chain. Rather than focusing solely on the product, the founding team also builds a green consumer community through media campaigns that raise awareness about reducing single-use plastic.
